A Legacy of Service, Resilience, and Compassion
The Head & Neck Cancer Alliance mourns the loss of Dr. Itzhak Brook, a cherished member of our Board of Directors and a devoted ambassador for the head and neck cancer community. After a long battle with esophageal and metastatic pancreatic cancer, Dr. Itzhak Brook passed away on January 10th, 2025, peacefully with his family by his side. He leaves behind an unparalleled legacy of advocacy, education, and service.
A Journey of Resilience
Dr. Brook’s life was a testament to the power of perseverance and the human spirit. After losing his vocal cords to throat cancer, he became a pioneering voice for patients worldwide, leveraging his personal experiences to bridge gaps in understanding and care. As the first and only laryngectomee survivor to serve on our Board, he brought a profound perspective to his work, combining medical expertise with the empathy of someone who had walked the same path as the patients he served.
Transforming Challenges into Opportunities
Dr. Brook authored two seminal works—My Voice: A Physician’s Personal Experience with Throat Cancer and The Laryngectomee Guide, translated into 28 languages—that remain invaluable resources for patients, caregivers, and medical professionals. His insights shaped the care of countless individuals navigating the complexities of head and neck cancer, and his dedication extended far beyond writing.
Dr. Brook was a passionate advocate, traveling the world to lecture and share his knowledge. He inspired Speech-Language Pathologists and other healthcare providers, leaving an indelible impact on their practices and their ability to support patients.
A Legacy of Leadership
Dr. Brook’s influence was instrumental in shaping the Head and Neck Cancer Alliance’s mission and programs. His service spanned over a decade, during which he offered invaluable guidance and tirelessly championed the needs of our community. Recognized for his contributions, Dr. Brook received the 2012 J. Conley Medical Ethics Lectureship Award and the 2024 Distinguished Service Award from the Head and Neck Cancer Alliance.
A Life of Remarkable Achievement
Beyond his work in head and neck cancer, Dr. Brook’s career was marked by groundbreaking achievements in medicine. He was a pioneer in reducing the need for childhood tonsillectomies, a respected leader in HIV treatment debates, and a dedicated member of the U.S. Navy Medical Corps, where he advanced treatments for the effects of nuclear and biological warfare. His contributions spanned over 700 scientific publications, nine medical textbooks, and decades of mentorship and education.
Inspiration for Generations
Dr. Brook’s life was rooted in a profound commitment to helping others. Whether advocating for veterans, championing the underserved, or guiding his children and grandchildren in scientific discovery, he exemplified kindness, determination, and a moral compass that inspired all who knew him.

Honoring His Memory
Dr. Brook is survived by his beloved wife, Joyce, his five children, and his five grandchildren. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all who were touched by his remarkable life.
