Charmaine White, a tongue cancer survivor, is a proud mother of three children. She has worked in the medical field for decades as a nurse. A Jamaican native, Charmaine recently became a U.S citizen.
Her journey began on September 11th, 2020, when she was first diagnosed with Stage 4 Tongue Cancer. As a nurse, providing care to various cancer patients, she understood the many struggles and challenges of cancer treatments and the side effects. She proceeded with caution.
A month following her diagnosis, Charmaine underwent surgery and approximately 98% of her tongue was removed. A GI-tube was inserted into her stomach to assist with feeding since she was unable to eat.
Post-surgery, Charmaine was informed the chances of her speaking were unlikely, and she would be hard to understand. A voice box was recommended but she declined.
The healing process took time, but now I am totally healed and am thankful I have overcome doctor’s predictions of me never being able to talk again. I give God all the glory and am thankful for the doctors and staff that have helped along this journey, explained Charmaine.
