Note: The deadline has passed for this scholarship. Applications are currently being reviewed and the recipient will be announced on Friday, April 27th. The Head and Neck Cancer Alliance is a non-profit foundation which operates under the direction of Dr. Terry Day, a prominent head and neck cancer surgeon at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). The foundation is pleased to announce that they will award a $3,000 scholarship to a first year medical student. Research will be conducted at Dr. Rita Young’s lab on the MUSC campus. The dates are May 15, 2012 – July 13, 2012. This scholarship was donated in honor of Desiree Roy who lost her battle to head and neck cancer. Applicants should have a particular interest in the area of head and neck oncology and the family is looking for someone willing to think outside the box to find a cure or vaccine, or ways to prevent cancer cells from growing and multiplying. This summer could be a kick off to a long term research pursuit. A personal statement should be sent to durguna@musc.edu and these will be reviewed by an in-house head and neck oncology surgeon. Deadline for submission is January 15, 2012. The top three will be reviewed by Desiree’s family who will choose the final candidate. The announcement of the awardee will be made on Friday, April 27, 2012 which is the day that the Alliance sponsors OHANCAW®, which provides free oral, head and neck cancer screenings worldwide.
