The South Carolina Chapter of the Head and Neck Cancer Alliance is made up of volunteers from numerous divisions at the Medical University of South Carolina. The group is composed of medical students, dental students, dental hygienists, nurses, nurse practitioners, PAs, residents, attendings, speech pathologists, administrative staff from the ENT department, and numerous survivors throughout the state.

The South Carolina Chapter is led by the following officers:
  • President:  Ashley Laursen - MUSC
  • Secretary:  Mary Beth Chalk - MUSC (also national board liaison)
  • Treasurer:  Jean Mathews - MUSC
  • Special Events Coordinator:  Ann Durgun - MUSC
  • Survivor Representative:  George Chajewski - MUSC employee/survivor

Some of the events that the SC Chapter coordinated this year included:

The SC Chapter’s 9th annual Survivor Banquet at which head and neck cancer patients and survivors were honored and celebrated.

The Chapter hosted a free screening event at the Family Circle Cup Tennis Tournament in Charleston, SC.

They also held a free screening on the MUSC campus during the Pink Fire Truck Tour, hosted by an organization that promotes women's health with a focus on breast cancer awareness.

In addition, the South Carolina chapter provided one screening site during OHANCAW 2011, at the Medical University of South Carolina and screened more than 50 individuals.

The SC Chapter also hosted their annual benefit concert called “Awareness Rocks,” where all proceeds benefit the Head and Neck Cancer Alliance. The group also holds a raffle at the event, where they give away donated prizes in order to raise even more money for the organization.

The SC Chapter also held free screenings at the NASCAR race in Darlington, SC. More than 200 people were screened at this event alone.

The SC Chapter also produced this video screening demonstration with MUSC Dr. Betsy Davis.

The dental students at MUSC organized the 2nd annual "Grins and Fins Poker Run" and provided screenings at this event. At the event, participants took their boats to different locations, picking up poker cards along the way. At the end of the race, the team with the best hand won the contest. Proceeds from the event benefited the Head and Neck Cancer Alliance.

The South Carolina chapter provides presentations for local middle schools, educating the students about the dangers of oral, head and neck cancer. View the PowerPoint presentation here.

The South Carolina Chapter also funds a patient assistance fund with their proceeds. This fund helps provide financial support to local head and neck cancer patients.

In 2011, the South Carolina Chapter of the Head and Neck Cancer Alliance, Inc. was nominated for the S.C. Secretary of State's "Angel" award for charitable work in the state.
